How to Make your own eco-friendly Ghatasthapana
The first day of Navaratri is known as Ghatasthapana or Kalasha Sthapana. Kalash (Ghat) means a vessel made out of gold, silver or copper. But mostly a kalash made out of clay is used. Sthapana means to install. Therefore Ghata Sthapana or Kalasha Sthapana means installing a pot filled with water.
Samapan vidhi :
On 10th day, do the puja of Goddess Durga as you do daily for 9 days. After puja, offer your worship of nine days in the feet of Ma Durga. Then you should pick the kalash and sprinkle the water in your house everywhere. You should, bath with it and all family members should get a sip of this sacred water. Take out the things you put into kalash, i.e. supari, coin etc. Keep coin in your locker where you keep your money. Eat the supari. Keep kalash at your home for any purpose.

Where to do the Ghatasthapana or Kalash Sthapana:-
The best place in a house to do the Ghata Sthapana or Kalasha Sthapana is in a direction called Eshanya (the north east corner) of the house. If no place is available then Ghatasthapana can be done preferably in a place so that we face east while doing the pooja to the Goddess. If not any other direction would also do, the only restriction is that the devotee performing the prayer to the Goddess should not see the South direction. The reason being that the lord of South direction is Lord Yama and any prayer or Namaskaram done seeing south would be taken by Lord Yama and hence it is best avoided to do puja facing south.
Process of doing the Ghata Sthapana: : How to perform?
Once the place is selected, clean the place. If possible clean the place with cow dung. Then the Kalash is placed over mud brought from the banks of the river. If mud from river or lake is not possible it is ok to use the mud used for plants in the house. Turmeric, Gold/Silver coin or a rupee coin is placed inside the Kalasah, water is poured, flowers, sandalwood paste is added. Some people would cover the pot or the vessel with an inverted coconut, before which mango leaves are kept around the opening. Some would simply close the pot or vessel with a red cloth. After the Kalash is ready, seeds of Barley are sowed in the mud surrounding the Kalasah or Ghata. Some people would sow seeds of nine kind of cereals in the mud. By the end of Navaratri, the plants from the seed would have grown upto 4 or 5 inches and are given as Prasad to the devotees and family members.

What to eat during Navaratri?
It is advised that devotees avoid Non –Vegetarian food during the Navaratri and if possible should only eat fruits and milk in the night. If that is not possible one can have meals in the night or can even have some snacks.
नवरात्री पूजा के लिए सर्वप्रथम सुबह में स्नान करके स्वच्छ कपड़े पहन कर पूजा प्रारम्भ करनी चाहिए !
नवरात्री के कलश स्थापना के लिए मुहूर्त के अनुसार, घर में मंदिर के सामने चौकी पर कलश स्थापना करनी चाहिए !
कलश स्थापना में मिटटी के बर्तन में मिट्टी दाल कर उसमें जौ डाल कर, उस बर्तन पर कलश को स्थापित कर कलश में गंगाजल मिला पानी डालकर, उसमें चाँदी का सिक्का, सुपारी और फूल डालकर उस कलश के ऊपर आम का पल्लव डाले !
एक छोटी प्याली में चावल डाल कर उस पर नारियल को रख कर उस पर जलता हुआ दिया रखे !
कलश को सजाने के लिए ॐ और स्वास्तिक कुमकुम से बना कर प्रतिस्थापित करे!
उसके बाद माँ के मूर्ति की या फोटो की स्थापना करके उनको गंगा जल अथवा पंचामृत से स्नान करवाए !
तत्पश्चात रोली मोली , और कुमकुम तथा वस्त्र आदि से सुसज्जित कर उन्हें आसन पर प्रतिष्ठित करे !
